A LUSAKA-based Zambian woman married to a British national has died six days after her male bestie beat her up during an outing.
A source revealed that Mercy Roberts, 30 and two friends including her male bestie, Charles Masautso Phiri went out for a day fun and patronised one of the drinking places in Nyumba Yanga on January 24.
However, a day that was meant for fun and enjoyment turned sour when Mercy had a misunderstanding with Charles resulting in a scuffle.
According to witnesses, Mercy fell to the ground and hit her head on a rock after being punched by the furious Charles.
From the fall, Mercy sustained a cut on the left side of her head after which Charles along with another female friend of Mercy helped her up and took her home.
However, Mercy later started complaining of having a headache and was taken to Chilenje Level One Hospital after she was issued with a medical report form by the Police.
And a report of assault occasioning actual bodily harm was logged by Mercy’s husband Collins Robert aged 56.
On January 27,2023, Mercy was referred to the University Teaching Hospital where she was admitted and later died the following day around 03:00hrs.
Zambia Police assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the assualt report and the the death of Mercy.
Chilabi said the deceased’s body was deposited at the UTH mortuary awaiting Postmortem while Phiri is detained in Police custody.
After an initial charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, Phiri is likely to face a murder or manslaughter charge.
“Police are yet to establish the motive behind the beating of the deceased and investigations are on-going,” Chilabi said.
