VAR TO BE USED IN ABSA CUP FINAL

TOMORROW’S ABSA Cup final between MUZA and Forest Rangers will see the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in Zambia for the first time.
VAR is a technology that allows referees to review controversial decisions using replays from multiple angles. It has been used in other countries for several years, and it is now being introduced to Zambia as part of a wider effort to improve the standard of refereeing in the country.
Janny Sikazwe, a former FIFA referee who is playing the role of VAR project manager, held an orientation session for both teams to explain how VAR will work.
“We know that this game will be officiated under VAR,” Sikazwe said. “It means that players, officials should know how to react because cameras will be on you. We know the rules now, kuti twamitamfya nangu twamipela Yellow.
“If we see there is a foul, once we see a player doing the signal of the official you are going to be cautioned. So tell your players if the refs see you doing this [Hand signal]…it will be a caution. So please be aware of this.”
Sikazwe said that VAR will be used to review decisions on goals, penalties, red cards, and other incidents that could have a significant impact on the outcome of the game.
