Govt investigating claims by former PF Ambassador to Ethiopia Emmanuel Mwamba on assault allegations by police officers.

Current Affairs

GOVERNMENT has expressed concern following allegations by Patriotic Front (PF) presidential hopeful Emmanuel Mwamba that he was brutalised by police during his arrest last week.

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Kennedy Kalunga says Law enforcement are guided by protocols that ensure fair treatment and thus investigations into the matter have been instituted.

Mr Kalunga has however, stated that it is equally important to ensure that such expressions and allegations do not disrupt the peace and stability of the nation.

“Government has noted with concern allegations circulating on various media platforms that Mr Emmanuel Mwamba, a member of the opposition Patriotic Front political party, was allegedly brutalised by police during his arrest. The nation will recall that on June 17, 2023 Police charged and arrested Mr Mwamba for two counts of forgery contrary to Section 342 of the Penal Code Chapter BB of the laws of Zambia and three counts of publication of information contrary to Section 54 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act Number two of 2021,” he said.

He noted that it ought to be emphasised that law enforcement agencies in the country operate with the utmost professionalism and integrity.

Mr Kalunga said they are guided by a comprehensive set of protocols that ensure the fair treatment of all individuals in custody.

“Any allegations of misconduct are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action is taken if any wrongdoing is found. Government firmly believes in upholding the rights of every citizen, regardless of their political affiliation. Government notes that Mr Mwamba has reported the matter to the Police Complaints Commission, which has the authority to investigate any allegations of misconduct or brutality involving law enforcement officers,” he said.

He put emphasis that Government respects this process and eagerly awaits their report, which will shed light on the details of the arrest and any potential misconduct, ensuring a fair and impartial assessment of the situation.

“In the meantime, it is essential that the public refrain from jumping to conclusions or spreading unfounded rumours. Further, Government urges all citizens to be patient while investigations on the matter are going on. However, it is equally important to ensure that such expressions do not infringe upon the rights of others or disrupt the peace and stability of our nation,” he said.
