THE National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) is proposing that the government introduces a serious screening national examination at Grade four.
NAQEZ executive director Aaron Chansa is of the view that unlike the current narrative where learners in Grade four proceed to upper primary without any academic screening, the proposed examination should only assess pupils in reading and writing, as well as Mathematics.
Mr Chansa says with this examination in place, only those able to read and write will be allowed to get into Grade five.
He says this measure will significantly improve the calibre of intakes into upper primary school and thereby help to improve the quality of education in Zambia.
Mr Chansa suggests that to further help improve the educational foundations in Zambia, there is need to introduce transitional tests between pre-school and Grade three.
