ZCSA warns of punitive measures against traders selling second hand underwear ‘thrift’.

Current Affairs

ZAMBIA Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has warned of punitive measures against importers and traders selling second-hand undergarments.

The agency said it will not allow the sale of used undergarments such as pajamas, night gowns, pants, brassieres, camisoles and vests among others.

ZCSA said the sale of used undergarments in the country by some importers is against the provisions of the compulsory standard for used textile products – Zambian Standard (ZS) 559: Inspection and Acceptance Criteria for Used Textile Products.

ZCSA Head of Communications Brian Hatyoka said the agency will continue withdrawing used undergarments from the market.

Mr Hatyoka said in a statement that other unauthorised products with the scope of the compulsory standards will also be withdrawn in order to protect the customers.

“ZCSA is warning of punitive measures against all importers who are illegally importing unsafe products especially used undergarments. We will continue withdrawing from the market all used undergarments and other unauthorized products which are within the scope of compulsory standards to protect the consumers,” said Mr Hatyoka.

Mr Hatyoka said traders whose undergarments will be seized will not be compensated by the agency.

He said the used undergarments can potentially transmit infections to secondary users of used underwear.

Mr Hatyoka said the agency will continue carrying out enhanced enforcement activities in a bid to protect consumers.
